People in Rotherham were ‘disappointed’ with council’s enforcement action to crack down fly-tipping.
They complained the negelection of officers on fly-tipping, as well as the low penalty the fly-tippers were subjected to.
Karim Herish, 35, a shopkeeper in Rotherham, said: “I feel extremely disappointed as officers did nothing with the increasing fly-tipping around especially in hidden areas.
“The council didn’t give us any support, so most of the time I had no option but to take the rubbish outside bag by bag myself.
“Increasing punishment is important, which was obviously not taken by the council until now.”
‘A man with vans’ has been operated in Rotherham as an illegal waste collection service. The waste was then collected and dumped at multiple sites in the city.
Jayne Senior, 42, who is working at the GP Surgery on York Road, Rotherham, said: “It was absolutely disgusting. I shake my head in disbelief as I walk into the clinic at the horrendous sights that greet patients and colleagues on a daily basis.
“Things such as mattresses split open and wet, shopping trolleys, bagged up household rubbish spilling over everywhere have completely blocked the road creating severe risks to road users.
“What truly made me upset is the council and policing team were extremely inefficient even if we reported actively.”
There were 26 vehicles which were involved in the waste crime activity seized in Rotherham until March 2020 since the start of the year, with fly- tippers being fined up to £20,000 for dumping their rubbish inappropriately.
Bramall Richard, 48, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council's Community Protection Manager for Street Scene and Environment Health, said: “In Rotherham we are very proactive dealing with fly-tipping as the council gives us funding to support what we do.
“I don’t think fly-tipping can be eradicated completely because there is always a criminal aspect where people who don’t care about the environment will continue to fly-tip as it’s easy money for them to make.
“Education enforcement is the key, so the main thing is obviously trying to get people to reduce the amount of waste they are creating and to ensure any waste they produced is disposed in correct manners.”
